ME Furniss & Sons are awarded a ‘Green stamp’, as environmental measurement company Credibly Green report on the environmental impacts of the operations on the 410-hectare site. Showcasing its commitment to the environment, ME Furniss & Sons are taking substantial strides towards reducing their carbon footprint by exporting electricity to the National Grid from their renewable energy projects.
If you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it. And that is exactly what ME Furniss & Sons has done regarding their environmental impacts. Using industry standard data, and a bespoke Carbon Toolkit, Credibly Green has delivered an independent environmental report to the company and awarded its ‘green’ stamp for environmental awareness. They are actively exporting a large fraction of renewable energy to the grid after supplying their own domestic and agricultural buildings and facilities.
This Credibly Green report identifies the carbon emissions equivalent of the farm in terms of electricity, water, fuel, waste and recycling activity between January 2016 and January 2017. The results found that whilst the farm consumed 746,757kWh of electricity (much of which was low or zero carbon renewable energy), they exported a total of 2,869,141kWh to the National Grid via their Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels and their Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant. A full breakdown of the total carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from ME Furniss & Sons is available within the report, by activity and utility. Fertiliser application was also considered in the report and this is by far the largest contributor to annual emissions, of the activities mentioned above, followed by fuel consumption.
ME Furniss & Sons are offsetting their carbon emissions by exporting renewable energy produced on site, resulting in a total net saving of 605.3 tonnes CO2e for the activities as measured by this report. The carbon emission of ME Furniss & Sons fertiliser application was difficult to accurately quantify due to the vast range of influential factors (including season, crop, weather and location). The application of the digestate recovered from the onsite AD plant is however another way ME Furniss are reducing their environmental impact through replacement of other fertilisers.
“With recent intensification of farming practices across the UK, environmental awareness is key to promoting responsible and sustainable environmental management. ME Furniss & Sons identified that there were ways to offset the carbon impact of their fertiliser application/ fuel consumption by generating electricity from renewable energy sources. They are continuing to take steps to measure and understand the key impacts of their own operations and will be advocates of change within nearby farming communities.” Paul Frith, Director.
The issue of a Credibly Green ‘Green’ stamp means that ME Furniss & Sons has been independently assessed for the environmental impact of their waste management operations, energy, fuel and water consumption.
